SHARED WISDOM
- Q: Has anyone ever used a scheduling program for parents to see what appointments teachers already have and pick a time slot? (Counselor Talk, December 2018):
- We do that through SKYWARD now, and previously did it through a program set up by our corporation tech department. It simplifies some things, but, no matter how many times we publish the rules, we always get some who disregard. (Our school has academic teaming, so we ask that they only schedule with one academic teacher, since we could easily run out of slots if many try to book multiple teachers. That teacher collects reports in advance from the others and relays that info to parents.) We have a secretary who oversees the info, and either she or the teachers will call and talk to parents who over book to modify the appointments. Teachers need to check their list daily during sign-up period, and communicate the names of those with who they will be meeting to their team members.
At a school my daughter attended in 6th grade, they just had all teachers out in the cafeteria at tables, with a line of chairs set up for waiting. I could pick up her card, check out the grades and comments, prioritize those I wanted to see most, and check out the waiting situation. Parents were limited to about 3 minutes and so even teachers with many waiting eventually were available. I was able to see all teachers in about 30 to 40 minutes. We also did this at a high school I taught at previously. Much simpler…
