BRIEF SUMMARY
Professional development refers to many types of educational experiences related to an individual’s work. For school counselors to be as effective as possible, they continually expand their knowledge and skills to implement the best counseling and educational practices.
KEY POINTS
- “Professional development” usually means a formal process such as a conference, seminar, workshop; collaborative learning among members of a work team; or a course at a college or university. Professional development can also occur in informal contexts such as discussions among colleagues, independent reading and research, observation of a colleague’s work, or other learning from a peer.
SHARED WISDOM
- The Indiana Youth Institute offers professional development grants (PDGs). The information will be on our website (here).
- Sometimes High Ability grants allow for some professional development that can include graduate studies. For example, if the teacher is interested in taking courses that would be applicable to the HA population, the grant could be used to fund those courses.

- Moodles
- Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) provides an online professional development series for Indiana School Counselors via Moodle. The intent of the series is to provide counselors with online professional development opportunities that may be used during staff professional development days. Indiana school counselors and agency partners developed these free training modules which require between one and two hours to complete and allow participants to earn Professional Growth Points for license renewal.
