Group Counseling-General

Small group counseling is an effective and efficient way to deliver tier 2 social/emotional support to students. You will have learned the basics of dynamics and techniques as part of your graduate works but working out the logistics of providing groups in the school setting can be challenging.

Grief (see also Death/Dying)

Grief may not feel normal but it is. Everyone will grieve in their own way.  When a child grieves, you might not even realize that they're grieving. Kids process and display complex emotions differently than adults. However, that doesn’t mean the grief is not happening and that a child isn’t affected by their emotions. Children aren’t too young to grieve.

Grade Transitions

Grade transitions, or transitioning between grades, can be both an exciting and a difficult time for many students and families.  The most typical grade transitions that children experience difficulty with are going from Kindergarten to 1st grade, moving from elementary school to middle school (this sometimes happens from 5th to 6th grade or 6th to 7th grade, depending on whether the student attends a middle school or a junior high school) and then the transition from middle school to high school.

Weighted Grades

Grade Replacement

Grade replacement refers to the process of repeating a course for credit.  This means that the student takes the course for a second time.  Grade replacement may be a way that students try to raise their GPA if they have experienced one/some low grades in high school.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

A grade point average is a number representing the average value of the accumulated final grades earned in courses over time. More commonly called a GPA, a student's grade point average is calculated by adding up all accumulated final grades and dividing that figure by the number of grades awarded. High school GPAs are measured on one of two scales: weighted or unweighted.

Grades/Grading

Academic achievement is a big focus in schools. The most common indicator of academic achievement is grades.  Grading in education is the process of applying standardized measurements of varying levels of achievement in a class.

Early Graduation

Early high school graduation is allowed in Indiana.  IC 20-36-5 specifically permits a waiver of minimum number of semesters required for graduation in order to allow students to graduate high school early.

Core 40 Opt-Out

To graduate with less than Core 40 (one option is the Indiana General Diploma), a formal opt-out process must be completed.

High School Equivalency (HSE)/formerly GED

The Indiana HSE (High School Equivalency) is an alternative for earning a high school diploma. An HSE Diploma can be earned after completing a test based on five subject areas (math, reading, writing, science and social studies).
