Mental Health

One in five youth have a mental health condition, with half of mental health conditions developing by age 14. Yet, less than half of youth with mental health conditions received any kind of treatment in the past year. Undiagnosed, untreated, and inadequately treated mental illnesses significantly interfere with a student’s ability to learn, to grow, and to develop.

License Renewal

Educators in Indiana, including school counselors, record professional development (PD) activities and associated Professional Growth Plan (PGP) points in a Professional Growth Plan to qualify for license renewal.  The PGP (Professional Growth Plan)  is one (1) option for accomplishing the renewal of an educator license.   Ninety (90) Professional Growth Plan (PGP) points are required for the normal license renewal of five-year and 10-year licenses. One (1) hour of participation in a PD activity equals one (1) Professional Growth Plan (PGP) point.  You may also renew a license with coursework.

LGBTQ

Supporting students on the LGBTQ+ spectrum, as well as their allies, is critical in the role of the school counselor as often, these students are most at-risk of being marginalized (at home and/or school) and exhibiting symptoms of anxiety, depression, self-harm.  They are also disproportionately at risk for completion of suicide.  The follow resources can greatly help school counselors support students of this demographic.

Learning Styles

The existence of ‘Learning Styles’ is a common ‘neuromyth’, and their use in all forms of education has been thoroughly and repeatedly discredited in the research literature. Job Shadowing

Job-shadowing is often touted as a career-exploration activity for middle-school and high-school students to help them determine a career path to follow. Shadowing also helps students see how their textbook learning can be applied in the real world.

Job Corps

Jobs Corps is a federally-funded comprehensive no-cost education and vocational training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor program that helps young people ages 16-24 improve the quality of their lives by empowering them to get great jobs and become independent. 

IU High School

Indiana University High School is a distance education program serving the academic needs of high school students and adult learners around the world.  Students in the program can take individual online courses, or earn a complete diploma from Indiana University High School. 

Internships

Internship opportunities available for high school students are increasing and they provide students with valuable information even before they enter college. 

Internet

Almost all children today have access to the Internet through schools, libraries, community centers, or their home. And most 8 to 18-year-olds, 74 percent, have Internet access from their home computers (according to the Kaiser Family Foundation).
